Sutherland Shire

The Sutherland Shire is located in Sydney’s southern region. It is situated approximately twenty six kilometres south from  Sydney Central Business District. It is bordered by Canterbury, Bankstown, Wollongong, Liverpool, Georges River and Campbelltown government areas.

The Sutherland shire is quite large and is home to 218,464 people. The Sutherland Shire is colloquially known as “The Shire” and has been a popular location for a number of reality TV shows.

The Sutherland Shire is actually the first point at which Captain James Cook landed in Australia. Kurnell, which is a suburb within the Sutherland Shire, was the first landing site of the first fleet. This was later moved to Sydney Cove or more commonly known as Circular Quay.

The Sutherland Shire in 2005 gained a lot of publicity around the Cronulla riots. These were instigated by an attack on a lifeguard by a youth of Lebanese descent. An anonymous text message called for an attack on “Lebs and Wogs” at local beaches the following Sunday. A series of riots and retaliatory attacks occurred on the following Sunday.

The sutherland shire is affectionately referred to as simply "The Shire".
