Its name originates from the time of the 1837 Canadian Rebellion, after which approximately sixty Canadians were transported to Australia as convicts. These convicts worked on the construction of Parramatta Rd through the area now known as Canada Bay, and the proliferation of Canadian convicts in the area inspired the suburb’s name. In Bayview park there is a plaque that recognises the exiles and it marks the spot where they originally disembarked.
