Chatswood is a major centre on Sydney’s North Shore, notable for both its residential and commercial aspects. The Australian headquarters of companies such as Vodafone, Optus, IBM, and Pepsico are in Chatswood. It has high density apartments around the commercial area but also large palatial houses just outside of the metropolitan area.

It also is home to over 21,000 people according to the 2011 Australia Census, and has a diverse population with people coming from China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and England. The ancestry of the majority of residents in Chatswood come from China, giving the area the second highest Chinese population in NSW second only to Haymarket.

Recently Chatswood saw the development of the Chatswood to Epping rail link, which led to the redevelopment of the shopping precinct around Chatswood Station in the mall, Westfields and Chatswood Chase shopping centre. This link has added to the ease of commuters in the local area and has made Chatswood into a veritable hub for the community as it is the now the North Shore's major retail and commercial district.

Chatswood was named after Charlotte Harnett, the wife of the Mayor of Willoughby. It was originally known as Chattie’s Wood, but was then shortened to Chatswood.

Chatswood is home to several good schools, both primary and secondary, such as Chatswood High School and St Pius X College; it is also convenient for private schools in North Sydney such as Monte Sant’Angelo. Chatswood is part of Willoughby Council area and its postcode is 2067.
