Chifley is a small suburb at the southernmost tip of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, part of Randwick City council area. As of 2011, Chifley’s population was 3,147, and its postcode is 2036.
Chifley is named after Ben Chifley, who was Australian Prime Minister from 1945-1949 just after the end of World War II.
Prior to the 1960s, it was Crown land with a small population; in the 1960s, a large public housing complex was built and Chifley was divided off from southern Matraville. Chifley only became a suburb in 1964 after this separation.
Chifley is mainly a residential suburb, and has a small shopping strip only; its residents shop in Matraville and Maroubra Junction. Chifley is popular with families and older people, and has many sports facilities such as the Women’s Athletic Field and Bunnerong Equestrian Park.
In Chifley’s west there is a remnant of Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, which is being preserved as it is one of the few remaining areas of this habitat, which once covered much of eastern Sydney.
