Daceyville, Sydney

Daceyville is a suburb in Sydney’s east and is bordered by Kingsford, Eastlakes, and Pagewood. Daceyville is primarily a residential suburb, dominated by Daceyville Public School which takes up a .02 square kilometre site. It was established on this site in 1921. Considering the whole suburb is only .4 square kilometres this is a large proportion of the area.

Daceyville was Sydney’s first public housing scheme, established in 1912. It was intended to have nearly 2000 homes, but development was halted by World War One.

It also contains Australia’s first cul-de-sac, Colonel Braund Crescent, which served to create a strong community atmosphere. Daceyville recently celebrated its centenary on June 3, 2012.

Several of Daceyville’s streets are named after historical figures, such as Cook Avenue and Joffre Crescent, and Astrolabe and Boussole Roads, named after the ships of La Perouse.

Daceyville is part of the City of Botany Bay, originally inhabited by the Kameygal people, and still has a small Indigenous population. Daceyville has become rapidly multicultural in the last few decades, with residents ranging from Brazil, Malta, Hungary, Greece and Vietnam.
