Artarmon, Sydney

Artarmon is a small suburb but has a great sense of community in the area. Artarmon is divided into residential and industrial areas by its major roads and train line, with the industrial section south of the Gore Hill Freeway. Artarmon is a suburb on the Northern Line, between St Leonards and Chatswood. Artarmon’s postcode is 2064 and it is part of the Willoughby Council area.

Three television stations broadcast from Artarmon SBS, Ten, and Seven. SBS radio is also broadcast from Artarmon. Artarmons main shopping strip is on Hampden Road and Wilkes Avenue across from the train station. Artarmon is on the North Shore and Northern City Rail Train line.

Artarmon was named after the Artarmon Estate in Ireland, the home of William Gore, the Provost-Marshal under Gov. Bligh.

The residential area of Artarmon is leafy and quiet with around 8,650 residents. It is home to a large Japanese and Korean community, as well as many people from mainland China. Artarmon, therefore, is home to one of Sydney’s Buddhist communities.

Artarmon has several buildings on the National Estate Register, including the Chatswood South Uniting Church which was built in 1871.

Notable residents from the area include the photographer Max Dupain who's studio was in Artarmon until his death in 1992, and also the renowned academic Professor Ron McCallum AO who was the Dean of the Sydney Law School 2002-2007.
