Malabar, Sydney

Malabar is a suburb in the far south of the Eastern Suburbs, bordered by Matraville, Chifley and Little Bay. Malabar is part of the Randwick City Council area. Malabar is only serviced by Sydney buses, from the CBD then along Anzac Parade to Malabar. The population of Malabar is around 4,937 according to the 2011 Australian Census with almost 64% of the population male. This is well above the median across Australia.

Malabar has a few main attractions in the area. It is mostly dominated by the ANZAC Rifle Range, the largest firing range in the southern hemisphere, and by Randwick Golf Course. The Malabar Riding School shares space with the Rifle Range. Other than these Malabar is a primarily residential suburb, it has several primary schools and preschools, but no secondary schools. Malabar has a strip of shops and cafes, on Prince Edward Street, but generally it is a small community focused on the beach and headland.

Prior to 1933, Malabar was known as Long Bay, but was later renamed Malabar after the MV Malabar, a cargo steamer which was wrecked there in 1931.

Parts of Malabar headland were recently converted into National Park, in February 2011.
