Matraville is a suburb in the extreme south of the Eastern Suburbs, near the Port Botany shipping area. Matraville is extremely close to where the Comte de La Perouse landed his ships two weeks after the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.

Matraville was named after the sailor and diplomat James Matra, Matra came out with Captain Cook in 1770 and was good friends with him and Joseph Banks. Modern Matraville was founded as a soldiers’ settlement after WWI, and its public school is still called Matraville Soldiers’ Settlement PS, though the original buildings have now been subdivided and made into residential housing.

In addition, many streets in Matraville are named after World War One battlefields in which Australians figured prominently, such as Amiens, Ypres, and Pozieres. Matraville was also home to many market gardens after the gold rush of the 1850s, which saw the arrival of many Chinese migrants.

Chinese market gardens existed in Matraville long after they were squeezed out of other areas, only being forced to close in the 1970s, despite fierce local opposition. Matraville is primarily a residential suburb with a small shopping area. The population of Matraville as of the 2011 census was 9,039, and its postcode is 2036.
