North Ryde, Sydney

North Ryde is one of Sydney’s major business districts, other than that of Sydney itself, and is the location of many company headquarters, including Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, Sony, Foxtel and Optus. This is due to its proximity to the science and technology-oriented Macquarie University.

North Ryde today is also a residential area with around 10,115 people living in the suburb. The population is primarily made up of academics, students associated with Macquarie University and businesspeople associated with the big corporations in the area.

North Ryde has several primary schools (North Ryde PS and Truscott Street PS, as well as Holy Spirit Primary School), but no public high school since North Ryde High School closed in 1999. Secondary students in North Ryde generally attend Ryde Secondary College.

Macquarie Specialist Hospital and Macquarie Hospital are located at Macquarie Park, North Ryde, but neither of them have emergency departments: North Ryde is served by Ryde, Concord, and Royal North Shore Hospitals.

North Ryde was originally the home of the Wallumedegal people of the Ku-ring-gai tribe.
