Petersham, or Little Portugal as it’s sometimes known, is a leafy suburb in Sydney located approximately six kilometres out of the CBD in the municipality of Marrickville. The population is approximately seven thousand. It has a tight-knit and active community, and is the home of Sydney’s first selective high school, Fort Street High School. This primarily residential suburb features many Victorian-style terrace houses, some of which are heritage listed.
Petersham is known for its large number of residents of Portuguese and Southern European descent. Its modest but charming shopping strip includes several Portuguese cafes and restaurants, which are well known for their delicious Portuguese Chicken.
The suburb also hosts the Audley Street Festival, which celebrates the community’s Portuguese heritage. The suburb borders Leichhardt, Stanmore, Lewisham and Marrickville, and shares with them a bohemian village atmosphere.
The original indigenous inhabitants of the Petersham area were the Cadigal people of the Eora Nation.
