Randwick, Sydney

Randwick is a large and highly populous suburb in eastern Sydney, surrounded by Kingsford, Coogee, Clovelly, Bronte, South Coogee and Maroubra. Randwick’s population as of 2011 was 27,740, and its postcode is 2031. It is mostly a residential suburb with a high student population, due to its proximity to the University of New South Wales.

Randwick is home to the Royal Randwick Racecourse which is renowned for the Spring Racing Carnival and also in summer is home to the Future Music Festival which draws in thousands of people each year. Randwick also has satellite campuses of the University of New South Wales and is home to the Sydney Children’s Hospital, and the Prince of Wales Hospital.

Randwick has a great deal of heritage architecture, including St. Jude’s Church and the James Cook Statue. St. Jude’s was designed by the renowned architect Edmund Blacket who also designed St. Andrew’s Cathedral and the original University of Sydney.

Randwick is also home to one of the few Art Deco cinemas remaining in Sydney, the Randwick Ritz. The Randwick Ritz has had a Permanent Conservation Order placed on it by the local council in 1993 when the owners applied to take it down and rebuild in the location. It is now listed on the Register of the National Estate. The Randwick Ritz is located at The Spot, Randwick’s shopping and culture precinct. In 2008, The Spot Walk of Fame was established by the City of Randwick, commemorating notable persons in the Australian film industry.
