Riverwood, Sydney

Riverwood is a residential suburb in Sydneys south-west. It is bordered by Roselands, Punchbowl, Padstow, Peakhurst and Beverly Hills. Salt Pan Reserve and Riverwood Park take up the north-west quarter of Riverwood, encircling a development with street names such as Pennsylvania Road, Washington Avenue, and Roosevelt Avenue.

During World War Two, Riverwood then known as Herne Bay was the site of a major American military hospital, the 118 General Hospital. This hospital had approximately 4250 beds and was visited by General Macarthur and the American First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. It saw performances for patients by Artie Shaws Band and Bob Hope.

Riverwood today is comprised of low- and medium-density residential areas north and south of Riverwood Station. The main shopping precinct is located around Riverwood Station on both sides of the East Hills Line, around Belmore Road and Thurlow Street.
